* Overview

  Data Engineering Workshop (DEWS) sponsored by IEICE becomes one of
  the most well-known forums in data engineering area in Japan. DEWS
  has long history, and is organized and held mainly for young
  researchers every early spring. Various interesting topics related
  to data engineering are presented and discussed in the workshop.

  Specific areas of interest for the 14th DEWS include not only
  classical themes in data engineering but also farsighted, advanced,
  and wider topics. It is expected to contribute to evolution and
  expansion for new data engineering areas through discussion and
  debate in the workshop.

  The workshop will be held in Katayamazu, which is very old and
  famous spa area in Japan as well as in Hokuriku region. The location
  is very convenient for the access from major cities such as Tokyo,
  Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, and etc. The workshop venue is
  located by beautiful Lake Sibayama-Gata. You will also be able to
  see noble and white-snowed Mt. Hakusan. These beautiful sceneries
  and the spa will have you relaxed. In addition, fresh seafood from
  Japan Sea will absolutely satisfy you!

  Please submit your papers and join us for the enjoyable and
  interesting workshop.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
* What's new in DEWS 2003
  At DEWS 2003, sessions in English will be provided. Those who want
  to present a paper in English (not only English-speaking students or
  scientists but also non English-speaking people wanting to gain an
  experience of English presentation) are welcome to submit papers to
  the English session. If you want to make a presentation in English,
  please choose the English Session when submitting the abstract of
  your paper. For further information, please look at the DEWS 2003
  home page.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

* Important Dates

  Abstract due: Dec. 20, 2002
  Submission due: Jan. 10, 2003
  Notification of acceptance: Feb. 10, 2003
  Final submission due: just before the workshop (to be announced)
  Workshop: Mar. 3-5, 2003

* Categories and Formats

  [Category 1: Full Paper](*1)
    The length of a paper must not exceed 8 pages including all
    figures and tables in the IEICE technical report format (*2). The
    category name "[Full Paper]" must be marked above the title in the
    first page. Papers in this category should be almost final
    version. Major modification is not allowed at the final
    submission. The winner of the outstanding paper award will be
    chosen from this category.

  [Category 2: Extended Abstract](*1)
    The length of a paper must not exceed 4 pages including all
    figures and tables in the IEICE technical report format (*2). The
    category name "[Extended Abstract]" must be marked above the title
    in the first page. Major revision might be made to papers in this
    category in response to review results at the final submission.

  (*1) Regardless of the categories, some papers may be accepted for
       Poster Session depending on the number of submissions. The
       latest information will be announced at the DEWS 2003 web site
       (http://www.jaist.ac.jp/DEWS2003/).

  (*2) The paper size should be A4 and the text should be typed using
       9pt Times Roman (or similar) typeface font in two-column
       single-spaced format. The first page should include the title,
       each author's information (name, affiliation, mailing address,
       e-mail address), an abstract of 100 words, and a few keywords,
       centered across both columns.

* Paper Submission

  Papers should be submitted electronically in PDF or PostScript
  (preferably PDF) through the DEWS 2003 web site.

  [Step1]
    The abstract of the paper should be registered no later than
    Dec. 20, 2002 through the paper registration page (which will be
    opened around Dec. 9, 2002). The category and the session type
    (English or Japanese) should be specified.

  [Step2]
    As soon as the abstract has been registered, the URL for uploading
    the paper will be sent by e-mail. The paper (PDF or PostScript)
    should be uploaded no later than Jan. 10, 2003 through the page
    specified by the URL.

* Awards

  [DEWS Outstanding Paper Award]
    The winner of this award will be chosen by the program committee
    from the papers in category 1. The awarded paper will be
    recommended by the Data Engineering Technical Group to the
    editorial committee of IEICE Transactions on Information and
    Systems.

  [DEWS Outstanding Presentation Award]
    This award will be given to the speaker who makes outstanding
    presentation at the workshop. The winner will be chosen regardless
    of paper categories.

* Workshop Proceedings

  Workshop proceedings will be published online in the IEICE web site.
  Note: There were incidents that papers presented at other workshops
        were regarded as formally published papers when they were
        submitted to some conferences and symposia. If you plan to
        submit your refined paper to another conference or symposium
        after DEWS, you should be careful enough not to cause such
        misunderstanding. It is recommended that your paper will be
        modified and refined its content as well as the paper title
        before the submission.

        The objective of DEWS is to discuss ideas that are too
        farsighted and too advanced to submit a paper to premium
        conferences. From this point of view, the papers submitted to
        DEWS are not regarded as final and completed works. Authors
        are encouraged to submit their well be refined papers to
        another conference or a journal, taking fruitful discussions
        and comments obtained through the workshop into consideration.

* Planning for IEICE Transactions' Special Issue

  Both Japanese and English IEICE Transactions are planning a special
  issue related to DEWS 2003. You also have the other alternatives
  such as DBSJ Letters and IPSJ Transactions on Databases (TOD), as
  well as the IEICE Transactions. The papers presenting at DEWS are
  recommended to be submitted to these Transactions and Letters. Other
  papers which are not presented at DEWS are also welcome.
