CALL FOR PAPERS

22nd International Conference on Conceptual Modeling
13-16 October 2003, Chicago, Illinois, USA

              http://conceptualmodeling.org/er2003/

SCOPE OF CONFERENCE

There has been a dramatic impact from trends of increased processing
power, storage capacity, network bandwidth, interconnectivity, and
mobility of computing devices. As processes and interactions in this
environment grow more complex, proper design becomes more important.
Conceptual modeling continues to have a vital role in advanced
information systems development. But new techniques will be required
to deal with the challenges facing developers.

The International Conference on Conceptual Modeling provides a forum
for presenting and discussing current research and applications in
which conceptual modeling is the major emphasis. The theme of ER2003
is conceptual modeling for the future. We especially invite forward-
looking and innovative contributions that identify promising areas
for future conceptual modeling research.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

We solicit submission of original research, as well as experience and
vision papers from both researchers and practitioners. We welcome any
topic where conceptual modeling is a major theme. Specific examples
of topics of interest include, but are not limited to, conceptual
modeling as applied to:

- information modeling concepts, including ontologies
- ontological and conceptual correctness in modeling
- e-business and Web-based information systems
- mobile information systems
- the Semantic Web
- semistructured data and XML
- information and database integration
- information retrieval, organization, summarization, visualization
- design methodologies and their evaluation
- software engineering and tools
- reuse, patterns, and object oriented design
- quality and metrics
- conceptual change and schema evolution
- spatial, temporal, and multimedia aspects in conceptual models
- metadata, its interpretation and usage
- reverse engineering and reengineering
- knowledge management systems
- user interfaces
- groupware and workflow management
- data warehousing and data mining
- advanced and cross-disciplinary applications

SUBMISSSION GUIDELINES

Authors should submit original manuscripts via the ER2003 Web site,
as PostScript or PDF files by 15 March 2003. Papers may not exceed
5000 words. Use at least an 11-point font and no more than 20 double-
spaced pages. (Typically published papers are 14 pages in LNCS
format.) The ER2003 home page (www.conceptualmodeling.org/er2003)
contains further details.

The proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag in the LNCS
series. Springer-Verlag publishes a full-text electronic version of
LNCS in parallel with the printed version, so the electronic source
of accepted papers will be required (LaTeX 2e format is preferred).
Authors of selected papers will be invited to submit extended
versions for possible publication in Data & Knowledge Engineering.

INDUSTRIAL PAPERS

Please submit papers for the industry track to one of the Industrial
Co-Chairs, Terry Halpin (terry [at] northfacecapital.com) or Peter Aiken
(paiken [at] acm.org) by 15 March 2003. We invite both full papers and
short papers. Please visit our Web site for full details
(conceptualmodeling.org/er2003).

WORKSHOPS

Workshops Co-Chairs are Manfred Jeusfeld (manfred.jeusfeld [at] uvt.nl)
and Oscar Pastor (opastor [at] dsic.upv.es). For workshop information,
see http://SunSITE.Informatik.RWTH-Aachen.DE/Societies/ER2003Workshops/.

TUTORIALS

Please submit tutorial proposals to one of the Tutorial Co-Chairs,
Ee-Peng Lim (aseplim [at] ntu.edu.sg) or Toby Teorey (teorey [at] eecs.umich.edu)
by 15 March 2003. Identify the presenter, the intended audience, and
the scope of the topic. Tutorials may be presented as a 90-minute
tutorial inside the conference, or as a half day (3 hour) or a full
day (6 hour) pre-conference tutorial. Suggested tutorial topics
include, but are not limited to: Semantic Web, Web knowledge
management, and data mining process modeling.

PANELS

We solicit proposals for panel sessions related to the conference
topics about which there is controversy and thus a need for public
discussion. Please send panel proposals to one of the Panel
Co-Chairs, Avigdor Gal (avigal [at] ie.technion.ac.il) or Elisa Bertino
(bertino [at] dsi.unimi.it) by 15 March 2003. See our Web site for more
detailed instructions.

DEMONSTRATIONS AND POSTERS

ER2003 provides a forum for ongoing work: poster reports on projects
in progress, demonstrations of alpha- and beta-versions of software
tools and products, invitations to cooperate on new project ideas,
etc. These should stimulate a highly interactive and future-oriented
added value to ER2003. Please send poster and demonstration
proposals to the Demonstration and Poster Chair, Heinrich C. Mayr
(mayr [at] ifit.uni-klu.ac.at) by 20 June 2003.
