１．報告集

●会議名： The 18th ACM Conference on Information and Knowledge Management
          (CIKM 2009)

The 18th ACM Conference on Information and Knowledge Management Organization
(CIKM2009) was held in Hong Kong on November 2-6, 2009. The conference was a
very successful event attracting many attendants and high-quality contributions.
In total, 123 full papers were accepted (14.5% acceptance rate) and grouped into
30 sessions. Traditionally, CIKM has been composed of three tracks: IR, KM and
DB and has promoted collaboration between multiple research areas.

Three keynote speakers were delivered at the conference: “DB-IR Integration and
Its Application to a Massively-Parallel Search Engine” (Kyu-Young Whang),
“Confucius and "Its" Intelligent Disciples“ (Edward Chang) and “Advanced
Metasearch Engines” (Clement Yu). Particularly interesting was the second
keynote speech by Edward Chang from Google Research, China. Confucius is the
name of Google’s Knowledge Search product based on integrating questions and
answers with Web search. The talk presented scalable algorithms for such tasks
as evaluating answer quality, ranking contributing users, generating labels for
questions, and so on.

Many presentations have been delivered this year which makes it difficult to
select the outstanding contributions. Among the most interesting and novel ones
in IR area I would mention: “Characterizing and Predicting Search Engine
Switching Behavior” (R. White and S. Dumais), “Analyzing and Evaluating Query
Reformulation Strategies in Web Search Logs” (Jeff Huang and Efthimis N.
Efthimiadis) and “Computational Community Interest for Ranking” (Xiaozhong Liu
and Vadim von Brzeski). The first paper describes the results of the study of
search engine switching behavior and its governing factors based on large scale
log-based analysis and survey data. The second paper proposes the taxonomy of
query refinement strategies and a rule-based classifier for detecting
reformulation types. Lastly, the third one introduces novel document ranking
method based on changing community interest over time by computing community
interest vector for each query.

Overall, CIKM2009 was an enriching experience and in almost every aspect the
conference was organized very well. Given the large number of diverse topics and
quite high level of presentations I believe that DBSJ community members could
find the outcome of CIKM2009 useful for fostering their research and could
benefit from participating in the next conference editions.

1. はじめに
2009年11月15日（日）に，VLDB2009勉強会を開催致しました．会場は，関西は立命館大
学，関東は筑波大学であり，両会場を遠隔会議システムにより接続し，遠隔で開催致しま
した．参加者は47名（関西：32名，関東：15名），うち発表者は29名（関西：20名，関
東：9名）でした．本報告では，VLDB2009勉強会の開催趣旨および開催に至った経緯を説
明したうえで，本勉強会の概要および雰囲気を報告し，今後の同種の勉強会開催に向けて
の課題を述べます．

2. 開催趣旨と開催に至った経緯
本年8月に開催されました国際会議VLDB2009で発表された全論文を一日で俯瞰し，今後
の調査や研究につなげることを目的とし，Research Sessionの論文を参加者の皆で分担し
て紹介するというものです．VLDB2009には，36のResearch Sessionがあり，1セッション
あたり3件の論文があります．基本的には，1名が1セッションないし2セッションの論文を
担当します．1論文あたり3分，1セッションあたり9分で紹介します．
このような国際会議の勉強会は，最近，データベース系の若手研究者の間で盛んに行わ
れています．同種の勉強会としては，本年8月5日にSIGMOD2009勉強会（幹事：渡辺知恵美
先生（お茶の水女子大学），天笠俊之先生（筑波大学），会場：お茶の水女子大学），9
月14日にSIGIR2009勉強会（幹事：大島裕明先生（京都大学），会場：神戸大学）がそれ
ぞれ開催されました．VLDB2009勉強会も，この流れに乗ったものであり，これが本勉強会
開催に至った経緯です．

3. 勉強会概要および雰囲気
本勉強会は，10時30分に開始し，18時30分に終了しました．昼休憩を挟み，計8時間に
わたって，発表者による論文紹介が行われました．今回は，発表時間が1論文あたり3分と
いうこともあり，非常に速いテンポで論文紹介が進みました．参加者にとっては，密の濃
い有意義な時間であったと思われます．
特に，本勉強会は，関西会場および関東会場を遠隔会議システムにより接続し，遠隔で
開催致しました．当日のプログラムには，関西セッションおよび関東セッションを設け，
各会場からの発表者による論文紹介が行われました．同種の勉強会の中では，遠隔会議を
試みたのは初めてであり，無事に開催できたことは，今後の勉強会開催に向けても意義が
大きいかと思います．
会場には，多くの方にお越し頂きました．関西では，会場が立命館大学（滋賀県草津
市）であるにもかかわらず，西は姫路や広島から，東は名古屋まで，多くの方に御参加頂
けました．また，学生の参加者も多く，全参加者47名のうち，27名（発表者：13名，聴講
者：14名）が学生でした．

4. 今後に向けて
本勉強会には，多くの方に御参加頂いた一方で，興味を持って頂きながらも，既に別の
予定が入っていた等，参加できなかったという方も多くいらっしゃいました．そのために
も，今後同種の勉強会を企画する際に，いかにして多くの方に参加して頂けるかも検討事
項として挙げられます．
今回は，9月14日に立案，11月15日に開催というように，立案から開始までの期間が2カ
月程度でした．そのため，参加者集めに十分な時間を確保することができませんでした．
たとえば主要な国際会議の1ヶ月後に勉強会を開催するなど，前もって日程を決めていれ
ば，予定を確保しやすくなり，より参加しやすくなると思われます．
また，遠隔会議の拠点を各地方に設けることも挙げられます．今回は，関西と関東に拠
点を設けましたが，たとえば東北や九州などの遠方から参加頂くことは困難でした．各地
方に拠点を設け，遠隔会議を行うことができれば，より多くの方に参加頂ける機会を提供
することができます．その意味でも，今回まず2拠点の遠隔による勉強会を開催できたの
は意義があるといえます．

5. おわりに
本勉強会は，多くの発表者および参加者の御協力により，大変盛況に終わることができ
ました．私と致しましても，このような重要な勉強会の幹事を務めさせていただき，盛況
に終えることができたのは，誠に光栄です．今後も同種の勉強会が定期的に開催されてい
くように，本勉強会で得られた知見などを生かしていきたいと思います．
